Shanghai Design Week 2013

Shanghai has a Design Week of its own. It’s not quite as fleshed out and prominent as its cousin up north in Beijing, but here it is anyway, folks — a relative Johnny-come-lately in the international design scene, running this year from September 5 to 11 at theShanghai Exhibition Center.

There hasn’t been much hoopla leading up to the event, and the official website isn’t very detailed. But, here’s what we do know. This year’s theme, roughly translated, has to do with design achieving dreams through innovation, open-mindedness and sustainable practices. Awards will be given out to the “Brand of the Year”, “Person of the Year” and “Product of the Year”. The first two categories will award three entities, while “Product of the Year” will award five.

The week’s events will be categorized into three ways of exploring the city’s design: first, the “Home Tour” at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, where visitors can see examples of local product design. Then there’s the “City Tour”, which is a walking tour of Shanghai’s creative communities. Organizers have prepared a map that details the work spaces, retail areas and cultural sites (mostly located in Jing’an district) that are considered design standouts.

Finally, the “Journey” leg of the event ties Shanghai to sister cities that also celebrate design. Something cheesy like that, anyway. Apparently there will be some design-related activities that rope in Florence and London. We’ve got the schedule of events below.
