Founded in 2004 by Leng Lin, now president of Pace Beijing, Beijing Commune is one of the most active galleries in the Chinese capital focusing on Chinese contemporary art. The space, a redbrick one-story building located in the 798 Art District, regularly mounts exhibitions by both established and emerging Chinese contemporary artists. The gallery has helped foster the
careers of major players in the Chinese art world, such as Song Dong—who filled MoMA’s atrium with the contents
of his mother’s house in 2009—and multimedia artist Yin Xiuzhen. When Yin and others left for bigger names like Pace, Beijing Commune shifted its focus to once again support emerging talents.
