Top 14 Chinese Art Events in 2014

BLOUIN ARTINFO anticipates the best and biggest art happenings at galleries, museums and fairs in China over the coming year.

1. Kicking things off, Hubei-born, post ’70s artist Tang Yongxiang’s first solo show will take place at Magician Space on January 11.

2. On January 18, 77-year-old Croatian artist Ana Tzarev will show 58 colorful oil paintings and 10 sculptures at Today Art Museum.

3. and 4. The following day, January 19, the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) launches two solo shows. Oil painter Ji Dachun’s “Without a Home”  features 40 works from past 10 years of creation, while MadeIn Company founder Xu Zhen enjoys a solo show.

5. On 16 February, ShanghART Beijing’s “5+” exhibition will feature works by five heavy hitters — Yu Youhan, Ding Yi, Geng Jianyi, Zhang Enli, and Yang Fudong.

6. and 7. On February 22, Pekin Fine Arts Beijing launches two solo shows: Beijing-based photographer Zhao Liang and Hong Kong director Yu Likwai.

8. Another exhibition at UCCA that we’re looking forward to is the group show “Art Post-Internet”, which opens on March 1.

9. On March 8, Galerie Urs Meile launches two solo shows: three performances by Liu Ding, and works by Russian artist Anatoly Shuravlev.

10. The Long Museum’s Xuhui Riverside building will open with its inaugural exhibition, “Re-View”, on March 28.

11. The Art Beijing art fair returns from April 30-May 3.

12. There’s still no word on the official opening date of Indonesian collector Budi Tek’s Yuz Museum in  Shanghai, but we’re told it should take place at the beginning of May.

13. The SH Contemporary art fair returns from September 12-14 after a year’s hiatus. The inauguration of the successful ART021 fair in the larger fair’s absence could see the two face off in 2014.

14. The Shanghai Biennale helped launch the Power Station of Art in October 2012, and will return there in 2014.
