Chinese Odyssey: Don Rubell discusses art-buying trips to China

Each year, Don and Mera Rubell open a new show during Art Basel Miami Beach fair week at the Rubell Family Collection, their collector space in Miami. The current show, “28 Chinese,” represents acquisitions made during five trips to China between 2001 and 2012.

“We visited over 100 studios and every decent gallery and museum in China,” Don Rubell said. Along the way, they bought more than 150 works of art, most of which are in the show.

“The underlying philosophy of the collection is that we look at it as a teaching tool,” he said. “We try not to buy isolated works but continuous work over a period of time, so that we can show the evolution of the artist.”
